Safety first: protection panels fitted to APC’s haulage fleet
Safety is always at the top of our agenda, so we were keen to embrace new safety measures to our haulage fleet by fitting fixed flat panels to prevent pedestrians and cyclists from being caught up in the side rails of our trailers and becoming entangled.
Research from Transport Research Laboratory has shown that a flat panel fixed over lorry side guards can significantly reduce the risk of death or serious injury in the event of collision with pedestrians, pushchairs or bicycles. The side panels are designed to prevent cyclists and pedestrians falling and being dragged under the wheels of a HGV, by creating a protective barrier between the road surface, vehicle underside and the wheels.
The panels have been designed and fitted by Dawes Highway Safety and are constructed from an extra tough aluminium reinforced shatter resistant composite. It is designed to bend rather than simply cutting into a person unfortunate enough be in harm’s way. The panels are fitted over existing side rails. They are supplied with warning signs and have APC’s strong branding displayed, so safety and marketing are working hand in hand!
Additionally, the panels improve the aerodynamics of a vehicle, thereby providing tangible fuel economies – something close to every fleet manager’s heart. They are also FORS/CLOCS/CCS recognised, recommended by TRL and now even becoming favoured by the insurance industry and helping to reduce premiums!
This is another example of how we are continually working to improve our safety record – for the benefit of our fleet and other road users.
